Buddies for the elderly

Buddies for the elderly

About 1,100 people, aged 65 and above, live on Bonaire. Many of them are lonely, live in poor and unsafe homes and / or have physical problems. A foundation helps these elderly people. It does this, among other things, via a "buddy system" whereby young people are linked to an older person. They visit the elderly at home, do odd jobs around the house for them and bring food and fruit packages. Small adjustments are also made to the house to improve safety, such as handles and handrails. A few times a year the foundation takes the elderly out for excursions and has them actively participate in outings. The Samenwerkende Fondsen Cariben contributed to these activities.
